Short answer
Both products do the same core job: instrument your website, app and servers once, then send the events to every tool that needs them. They have since moved apart. Segment, now part of Twilio, sells a pipeline (Connections) and a full customer data platform that adds unified profiles, audiences and journeys. RudderStack calls itself an agentic customer data platform and builds around your warehouse, saying it does not keep a copy of your customer data. That one architectural choice explains most of the differences below.
| Criteria | Twilio Segment | RudderStack |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Twilio (segment.com redirects to twilio.com) | RudderStack Inc., founded 2019 |
| Pricing meter | Monthly tracked users (MTUs) | Events per month |
| Free plan | 1,000 visitors a month, 2 sources, 1 warehouse | 250,000 events a month |
| First paid tier (as of October 2026) | Team from $120 a month for 10,000 MTUs, 14-day trial | Growth $265 a month billed monthly ($225 billed annually) for 1 million events, 30-day trial |
| Where profiles live | In Segment (Unify), synced hourly to a warehouse with Profiles Sync | In your warehouse (Profiles, Enterprise plan) |
| Custom code | Functions in JavaScript (free allotment of usage hours) | Transformations in JavaScript or Python |
| Warehouse sync | 1 a day (Free), 2 a day (Team), custom (Business) | Every 3 hours (Free), 30 minutes (Growth), 5 minutes (Enterprise) |
| Self-hosting | None listed on Twilio's pricing pages | Yes, rudder-server under Elastic License 2.0 |
| HIPAA | HIPAA eligibility on Business (BAA required; the plan table lists it as an add-on) | HIPAA and BAA on Enterprise |
Segment's pipeline product, Connections, has three plans. Free costs $0 and covers 1,000 visitors a month, two sources, one warehouse destination synced once a day and 500,000 Reverse ETL records. Team starts at $120 a month for 10,000 monthly tracked users, with unlimited sources, Public API access, twice-daily warehouse syncs, 10 seats and a 14-day free trial. Extra MTUs cost $12 per 1,000 between 10,000 and 25,000, $11 per 1,000 up to 100,000 and $10 per 1,000 beyond that, and annual billing saves up to 20%. Business is custom volume through sales and adds data governance, advanced roles and permissions, HIPAA eligibility (BAA required; the plan comparison table lists it as an add-on) and Regional Segment (EU or US). The full Customer Data Platform, which bundles Connections with Unify and Engage, is priced through sales and also billed on MTUs. Segment counts anonymous as well as identified users toward MTUs. See Twilio Segment Connections pricing.
RudderStack's Free plan includes 250,000 events a month, 16 SDK sources, 200+ cloud destinations, warehouse destinations and reverse ETL; data processing stops after a second consecutive overage. Growth costs $265 a month billed monthly, or $225 a month with annual billing, for 1 million events, rising to $2,750 a month billed monthly at 25 million events, with a 30-day free trial, unlimited team members, 30-minute warehouse syncs and 25 reverse ETL connections. Enterprise is custom and adds five-minute syncs, unlimited transformations, Profiles and Data Apps, HIPAA and SSO. See RudderStack pricing.
The meters reward different shapes of traffic. A content site with heavy anonymous traffic and few events per visit fits event pricing; a logged-in app where each user fires hundreds of events a month fits MTU pricing. As a rough check, 10,000 users at 100 events each is 1 million events: Segment Team at $120 against RudderStack Growth at $265. At 20 events per user, the same 1 million events covers 50,000 users, which on Segment Team would add 40,000 MTUs above the base. Run your own numbers before trusting either vendor's comparison.
Both collect from web, mobile, server and cloud-app sources. Twilio says the Segment catalog has 750+ integrations; RudderStack lists 200+ destination integrations and says it can also stream to systems such as Kafka. Segment Functions let you write your own sources, destinations and insert functions in JavaScript, with a free allotment of usage hours on every plan. RudderStack Transformations reshape events in flight in JavaScript or Python, with 5 transformations on Free, 25 on Growth and unlimited on Enterprise. For data quality, Segment Protocols (tracking plans, violations and blocking) is a premium add-on for Business customers, while RudderStack includes tracking plans on every plan, with limits on Free.
This is where the products split. Segment Unify resolves identities into user or account profiles inside Segment, with a Profile API for lookups, and Profiles Sync writes those profiles to your warehouse hourly. Unify is an add-on to the Connections Business tier and comes with the full CDP plan. RudderStack Profiles builds the identity graph and a customer 360 table inside your own warehouse from config files, generates code you can audit, snapshots the graph after each run and serves profiles through an activation API. Profiles is part of the Enterprise plan. If you already model customers in Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks, RudderStack's approach avoids a second profile store; if you have no warehouse, Segment does not require one. Our guide to identity resolution software covers the merge-rule questions to ask either vendor.
Segment's CDP plan includes Engage: audiences, computed and SQL traits, journeys with conditional branching and AI predictions, recommendations and generative audiences. Linked Audiences combines profile data with warehouse tables mapped in its Data Graph, and requires Profiles Sync. RudderStack's Enterprise plan includes an audience builder, activations, propensity scores and attribution on top of Profiles, and its newer Rudder Lookout, in public beta in October 2026, lets marketers explore warehouse data, build audiences and activate them in natural language. RudderStack also offers a CLI, an MCP server and APIs that give AI agents access across the platform. Segment Engage can also send SMS, email and WhatsApp campaigns through Engage Channels; RudderStack hands audiences to your email, ads and engagement tools, so plan that activation side too. Our reverse ETL comparison covers that step when the warehouse holds the audience.
Start with who will run it. If a marketing operations team needs to build audiences and journeys this quarter and nobody wants to maintain SQL models, Segment's CDP plan gets them there with fewer moving parts. If a data team already owns dbt models in a warehouse and wants the identity graph next to them, RudderStack fits the way they work and keeps one copy of the data. Then check the meter against your real traffic, and check destinations: list every tool you send data to today and confirm each one is in the catalog you choose.
If neither fits, Snowplow suits teams that want event-level behavioral data with their own schemas, Hightouch suits warehouse-first stacks that mainly need activation, and mParticle by Rokt suits large consumer brands with mobile apps. Our RudderStack alternatives and Segment alternatives roundups cover them in detail, our Tealium alternatives post covers enterprise tag management and CDP suites, and our customer data platform comparison covers the wider category.
Is Segment still a separate company?
No. Segment is owned by Twilio and sold as Twilio Segment. segment.com now redirects to twilio.com, where Segment's pricing, product pages and documentation live.
Is RudderStack cheaper than Segment?
It depends on how many events each user generates. Segment prices by monthly tracked users (Team starts at $120 a month for 10,000), while RudderStack prices by events (Growth is $265 a month billed monthly for 1 million events, as of October 2026). If each user sends about 100 events a month, 10,000 users is 1 million events, so model your own traffic on both pricing pages before deciding.
Can I switch from Segment to RudderStack without re-instrumenting?
RudderStack says its SDKs are API-compatible with Segment, so existing tracking calls keep working after you swap the SDK, and that it picks up the Segment anonymousId during the switch. Plan for differences in identity rules, transformations and destination settings, which do not carry over automatically.
Does either one store my customer data?
Segment builds unified profiles in its own platform and can sync them to your warehouse with Profiles Sync on an hourly schedule. RudderStack says it does not store your customer data and builds its identity graph and customer 360 tables with Profiles inside your own warehouse.
Can I self-host either platform?
RudderStack's core data plane, rudder-server, is source-available under the Elastic License 2.0 and can run on your own infrastructure. Segment is sold as a hosted service, and Twilio's pricing pages list no self-hosted edition; it does publish libraries and integrations on GitHub.
