Short answer
People usually compare these two at a specific moment: the Mailchimp account that started as a newsletter now has a welcome series, a cart reminder and a sales team asking which leads opened the pricing email. Mailchimp, owned by Intuit since 2021, is a broad email and marketing tool for small businesses. ActiveCampaign, headquartered in Chicago, sells itself as an autonomous marketing platform with automation, CRM and messaging channels built around one contact record. Both send good email. The gap is in what happens after the first click.

ActiveCampaign's US pricing page shows four plans, priced by contacts, and quotes each as a monthly price billed yearly for 1,000 contacts. Starter is $15 a month: 10,000 email sends, 1 user, multi-step automation, AI-powered automation and campaign builders, 250+ email templates and 15 active business goals. Plus is $49 a month: cross-channel marketing, generative AI for content and images, landing pages and site messages, 25 business goals and the option to add the Enhanced CRM. Pro is $79 a month: 12,000 sends, 3 users, predictive sending, conditional content, advanced segmentation, attribution and conversion tracking, and 200 business goals. Enterprise is $145 a month: 15,000 sends, 5 users, single sign-on, HIPAA support, premium segmentation, custom objects, premium CRM integrations such as Salesforce, a dedicated account team and an uptime SLA. Every plan includes 500 AI credits, and you can buy more. WhatsApp has its own plans. A 14-day trial needs no credit card, and ActiveCampaign offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. See ActiveCampaign pricing.
Mailchimp's Free plan covers up to 250 contacts, 500 sends a month (250 a day), one seat and one audience. Essentials starts at $13 a month (3 seats, up to 4 flow steps, A/B testing, up to 50,000 contacts). Standard starts at $20 a month (5 seats, up to 200 automation flows, predictive segmentation, generative AI, up to 100,000 contacts). Premium starts at $350 a month (unlimited seats, phone and priority support, custom plans above 250,000 contacts). Essentials and Standard have a 14-day free trial that asks for payment details, and overages apply if you pass your contact or send limit. See Mailchimp pricing.
These numbers are not quoted at the same list size or billing term. ActiveCampaign shows 1,000 contacts billed yearly; Mailchimp shows each plan's lowest contact tier on monthly billing. Put your own contact count into both calculators before you compare, and add SMS or WhatsApp costs if you need them.
ActiveCampaign lists email, SMS, WhatsApp, transactional email and CRM as native channels on one contact record. Its SMS supports two-way conversations, a dedicated 10-digit long code and automations to 180+ supported countries. WhatsApp runs on the WhatsApp Business API with a shared inbox, flows and chatbot support. Transactional email comes from Postmark by ActiveCampaign. One catch: the pricing table marks cross-channel marketing as not included on Starter, so check plan fit before you build flows that mix email, SMS and WhatsApp.
Mailchimp centers on email, with landing pages, forms, pop-ups and social posting on every plan. SMS is a paid add-on in select countries (credits are issued monthly and expire), MMS works on Standard and Premium for US and Canada contacts, and transactional email is a separate add-on. There is no WhatsApp channel in its plan features.
Automation is ActiveCampaign's home turf. Every plan includes multi-step automation, and the builder offers split and conditional actions that route contacts by behavior, site and event tracking, behavioral triggers, and an AI Actions Library you can drop into any workflow. Pro adds predictive sending at each contact's best time and conditional content (one email, a version per contact). Business Goals track whether a campaign hits its target.
Mailchimp's Marketing Automation Flows (renamed from Customer Journey Builder in June 2025) cap Essentials at 4 flow steps and give Standard and Premium up to 200 flows with multiple starting points and branching. Standard also adds send time optimization, dynamic content and multivariate testing. That covers welcome series, abandoned carts and win-backs well. It gets harder when one flow needs to branch on CRM data, lead score and a text reply. If you are new to triggers and flows, start with our guide to email marketing automation.
ActiveCampaign sells a CRM with sales pipelines, lead scoring, task management, 1:1 email, deal routing, sales reporting and AI that scores deals by win probability. On the pricing page, the Enhanced CRM (two add-ons: Pipelines and sales engagement) is available on Plus, Pro and Enterprise, not on Starter, and it costs extra. Mailchimp's audience tools (contact profiles, tags, surveys, purchase behavior and an inbox) are built for marketing; its plan comparison does not list deals or pipelines. If a salesperson works your leads, that decides it.
ActiveCampaign says it integrates with more than 950 apps (its channels page says 1,000+), including Shopify, Salesforce, WordPress, WooCommerce, Zapier, Typeform, Slack and PayPal, and Enterprise adds custom objects and premium CRM integrations. Mailchimp lists 300+ integrations, including Shopify, WooCommerce, Square, Stripe and Salesforce, plus a one-click site tracking pixel for Shopify, Wix, WooCommerce and custom sites. Both connect to AI assistants: ActiveCampaign through MCP connectors for ChatGPT and Claude, Mailchimp through connections to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Codex and Google Workspace.
ActiveCampaign calls its AI Active Intelligence and includes it in every plan with 500 AI credits. It builds campaigns and automations from a prompt, suggests segments, imports your colors, fonts and logos through AI Brand Kit, remembers context through Custom Instructions, and runs Scheduled Tasks such as a weekly account audit that waits for your approval. Generative AI for content and images starts at Plus.
Mailchimp includes generative AI at no additional cost on Standard and Premium, with Write with AI in the editor. Intuit Assist is in beta for certain Standard, Premium and legacy users in select countries (English only), and Intuit Intelligence (beta, limited availability on paid plans) adds Analytics AI that explains which campaigns and automations drive revenue. Mailchimp's AI leans toward store data; ActiveCampaign's leans toward running the account for you.
Ask who acts on a lead after it clicks. If the answer is "nobody, the email does the work," Mailchimp Standard is cheaper to start and simpler to run. If a salesperson calls, a text follows, or one journey branches on five behaviors, ActiveCampaign is built for that, and Plus is the realistic starting plan. Try the same flow in both: a signup, a 3-email nurture, an SMS reminder and a handoff to sales. Price it at your contact count. The tool where you build it without workarounds is the one to buy.

Is ActiveCampaign better than Mailchimp?
For automation and sales follow-up, usually yes: ActiveCampaign includes multi-step automation on every plan, adds cross-channel marketing, landing pages and site messages from Plus, and offers CRM pipelines as an add-on. Mailchimp is the better fit if you want a free plan, a familiar editor and solid automation on its Standard plan at a lower entry price.
